View Full Version : Playoff Matches

I'm not trying to start a whole big arguement here, but I feel we need to look into the way Pubs are picked to host playoff matches. I understand that the pubs pay fees to FWDA for having teams play, but that should not automatically give them a playoff match.
I was officiating a match over the weekend, and I walked into 1 team begging the bar for a descent dart board to play the match on. Finally, on the third time, the bartender relented and gave them a dart board. If a Pub is picked to host a playoff match, isn't it their resposibilty to supply the dart boards? Every season, this pub is given a playoff match, and every season it is up to the teams to bring a dart board. I think thats stupid.
Then after the whole debacle with the dart board, I asked for the pub pack. Forget it. They had no idea what I was talking about, and I was told by the bartender that she was really busy and didn't have time to look for it. I eventually found it myself.
Then we have to look at the treatment of FWDA players from the pub staff. Appearently there was a problem with a bartender who felt inconveinced because he/she had to be up early in the morning. How many of us have gone to the 23rd game in playoffs? We are not always going to be done early.SORRY
There is a board meeting coming up in the next couple of weeks, and I have a couple ideas that I would like to bring up on changing the way we pick playoff pubs, But I would like to see some more ideas from other FWDA members.

I couldn't agree with you more. I would love to see ideas from our members. Apparently we have had other issues, regarding the playoffs, that need to be addressed at the next board meeting. I will keep you updated on the date of the next meeting.

I think basically it just comes down to "having balls" when it all boils down to it. Just not FWDA, but in society. God forbid we hurt someones feelings, ohhhh nooooo! Pfffttt. Accountability has just flown out of the window. Hold some establishments feet to the fire and the word will spread, believe me. Some of these places have gotten away with shoddy service towards the darters for so long (with no reprocussions) that it's second hat to them now. Why? Because we continue to cater to their establishments regardless. Make them accountable for their actions and send a message that if you want the business you'd darn well better earn it. Give them a few seasons worth of NO playoff matches and watch them take notice when the revenue goes down. Crying shame you have to hit someone in their wallets for them to take notice nowadays. Used to be a time when pride in workmanship and pride in your job made all the difference.

Kayla,
You can put them on here, or come to the next board meeting. Not sure when that will be, but it should be within the next 2-3 weeks

Hehe, I'm sure there has been a lot of discussion around the bar tables.
I'd like us to get back to the owners/reps coming to a scheduling meeting to draw the slots. If a pub doesn't show, they don't get a slot. Having an owner there will show that they do care, and minimum requirements for matches can be laid out to them. The scheduling meeting is used to review all the schedules and draw for positions in the playoffs. Most of the owners would know of conflicts with dates, events etc. This would also bring some more involvement from the pubs.
just my 2 cents,

I think that is a great idea Erik. Even at the CPB meetings there are limited owners that show up to represent thier pubs. I believe that there are certain requirements for these pubs to adhere to also. One is providing a good board to throw on is one. The other is making it so that the players have plenty of space and priority over other things that are happening at the pubs. We spend A LOT of money at all of the pubs that we play at; the least that they can do is provide us with a good place to play and the equipment that we need to throw our best darts. There are those pubs that do everything they can for us players and I give kuddos to those pubs and thier owners. I appreciate what they have done for our league and the players that support the game.

Erik, I agree. As you know, to draw at CPB, all rosters will need to be in at roster signups. We have had quite an issue, over the last few seasons, with teams that drag their feet and turn in rosters at CPB. When this happens, we have to scramble to change schedules, playoff brackets, etc. There are a lot of people that are unhappy with late playoff schedules, and this would eliminate this issue as well. Late team additions have been "allowed" to have more and more teams play during the season, but it creates a nightmare for those of us trying to organize the matches and playoffs. If we can have the members turn in their rosters (and fees) at the roster signup, this would eliminate a lot of problems. We would have the amount of teams, amount of matches, and playoff brackets available at the CPB, all captains would know when we are having playoffs, and the pubs would have a date and time for the playoff matches several weeks in advance. Most players are great, and have all of their information and money in at roster signups. How many CPB meetings have we listened to Erik go over how many teams ( and for that matter, pubs) owe money? Way too many. The true question is: Should we deny players and teams to accommodate the players that abide by the rules?
